To ensure a reliable water test kit, it should be easy to interpret the results and translate them into effective treatment or maintenance actions. This not only makes it easier to calculate treatment dosages but also helps to reduce wasted chemicals.

One type of swimming pool water test is the DPD test, which measures the level of oxidizers in the water, such as free and total chlorine, bromine, and ozone. This method is the best if you sanitize your pool with any type of Chlorine, including tabs, granular, or bleach. It is recognized by public health authorities as the best method for testing pools and spas.

Another variation of the DPD test is the FAS-DPD method, which measures both free and combined chlorine levels as low as 0.2 ppm (the maximum allowable level according to most health authorities and the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance). In comparison, the regular DPD method using color comparators generally allows readings as low as 0.5 and 1 ppm and as high as 5 or 10 ppm.

OTO is another option for testing pool water, which uses a liquid chemical called orthotolidine to cause a color change to yellow in the presence of total chlorine. Using a comparator, you would look for the color change. OTO is recommended for pools that are sanitized using Bromine. However, this method only measures total chlorine and is not permitted to be used at regulated facilities. It does not measure free chlorine.

Specialty kits are available that do not measure any sanitizers but concentrate on specific elements such as hardness, copper, hydrogen peroxide, etc. These kits typically use a drop test and comparator system for visual measurement.

For pool professionals and service technicians, we have digital test kits are available that use an electronic device to provide more precise measurements of pool sanitizer levels, pH, acid, etc. These kits are ideal for obtaining precise measurements within seconds.
